Types of iPhone cable explained
From time-to-time clients have questions about the types of iPhone cables they need to use. Here we’ll compare the types with pictures.
Dock connector
Introduced in 2003, the 30-pin dock connector was in circulation until approximately 2014 (some markets had it until 2016). USB-A at one end and the dock connector on the other.

Lightning connector
Introduced in 2012 to replace the dock connector, reversible and still in circulation. Due to the EU mandating the use of USB-C by the end of 2024, the last Lightning accessories will change in 2025.
Be aware of cheap non-certified cables that can cause issues. They cost less, but at what price. With the transition to USB-C, you can also get Lightning to USB-C cables.
